Leader in Me

This week we will continue to focus on Habit #4: Think Win-Win. This habit is about working together with others in order to achieve the highest results possible. It’s about embracing a mindset that focuses on cooperation, not competition. According to Dr. Covey, it is essential to think win-win in order to manage our relationships with others effectively. This week, consider how you and your student(s) can collaborate about decisions that need to be made and discuss ways that you can implement the idea of thinking win-win.

Holiday Food and Toy Drive

As you may know, the Chula Vista Welfare Council, Chula Vista Community Collaborative and the Chula Vista Police Activities League have all teamed together for a series of “Drive-Thru Donation” events to help provide resources for families in need in our District over the holidays. Students and staff at District schools as well as employees at the Education Services and Support Center annually collect canned food for the welfare council and toys for the activities league. With schools still closed, our ability to collect donated items has been impacted.

This past weekend’s rains severely impacted CVESD’s Drive-Thru Donation event.

The next Drive-Thru Donation Event is this Saturday at the ESSC. We need your help! We are especially in need of donated toys.

What: A drive-thru donation opportunity, where families, community groups and CVESD employees can bring a bag of canned food/new toys to donate.

When: The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, November 14, 2020.

Where:Education Service and Support Center, located at 84 East J Street, Chula Vista.

Why:The Chula Vista Welfare Council has its roots with the work of Anne and William Hedenkamp. For nearly 50 years, Mr. and Mrs. Hedenkamp volunteered to ensure that needy children in Chula Vista received food, shoes, and other necessary items to keep them healthy and in school.

Veteran’s Day

Please remember that Wednesday, November 11 is Veterans Day. In recognition of this holiday, there will be no school. We have school and will follow our regular schedule on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Leader in Me

This week we will continue to focus on developing Habit #3: Put First Things First. First things are the things you personally find to be most important in your life. According to Dr. Stephen R. Covey, “Putting first things first means organizing and executing around your most important priorities. It is living and being driven by the principles you value most, not by the agendas and forces surrounding you.”

We encourage you to talk to your kids this week about what it means to put first things first and look for ways to live this habit as a family/at home. One way for students to put first things first is by setting aside time to make sure they reach their Smarty Ants or Achieve3000 and iReady goal this week.

English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC)

ELAC Flyer

The Clear View English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) will be meeting on Tuesday, November 10 at 3:00 p.m. via Microsoft Teams. If you are a parent of an English Language Learner, I highly encourage you to be part of our ELAC and attend our meetings. In addition to pertinent information and trainings that will help parents of all children, the role of the ELAC includes:

  • Advising the principal and staff in the development of a site plan for English learners
  • Assisting in the development of the schoolwide needs assessment
  • Developing ways to make parents aware of the importance of regular school attendance

More information about ELAC is provided in the link below:

ELAC Overview (English/Spanish)

At this meeting we will look at student data and determine our ELAC committee officers.

All parents are welcome to come to our ELAC meetings; you do not need to be the parent of an English Language Learner to attend.

Online Program Usage Goals

As you know, all students have access to two of the following three programs: Smarty Ants, Achieve3000, and iReady. These programs have been proven to support students development growth in reading and math, especially when used the way the programs are intended to be used. Below you will see the program usage goal for each student:

Smarty Ants (K-2nd) – The goal for each student is to use the program for 15-20 minutes a day (Mon-Fri).

Achieve3000 (3rd-6th) – The goal is for each student to complete at least two activities each week with a score of 75% or better on the first attempt.

iReady – The goal for each is to spend 45-60 minutes on the program each week and obtain at least a 70% lesson pass rate.

Please help us ensure that each student is working toward and meeting the program goals each week.

Leader in Me

Over the next two weeks we will focus on Habit 3: Put First Things First. Put first things first means to prioritize things in your life. If you have a lot of things to do, ask yourself what is most important and do that first. This is a particularly important habit for students as they develop and solidify routines to help get the most out of distance learning.

Someone who puts first things first says, “I spend time on things that are most important. This means I say no to things I know I shouldn’t do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow a plan. I am disciplined and organized.”

Future skills that can be learned by putting first things first:

1 Demonstrate time management skills, 2 Cultivate a strong work ethic, flexibility, and adaptability, 3 Develop interpersonal skills of self-management, 4 Be accountable and responsible for actions and results, 5 Begin to cultivate analytical skills

Habit 3 activities that can be done at home:

  • Create a list of things that your child needs to accomplish throughout the week. With your child, rank the tasks by importance. Rewrite the list in order and post it by the calendar or some lace that will be seen throughout the week.
  • Set goals as a family.
  • Plan time as a family.
