Distance Learning

Here is a link to Mr. DeVore’s Weekly Message – April 27

We have officially completed two weeks of distance learning! I am proud of how hard our teacher are working to connect with students and engage them in variety of learning tasks. Although we have had to work through some challenges along the way, we are beginning to establish routines and a rhythm for distance learning. It has been fun hearing stories from teachers and families about how students have been excited to engage with their teacher and classmates again. We appreciate your support with learning at home; together we can help ensure that learning continues during this time of school closure.

2020-21 School Year

Although the Clear View Office remains closed, we are beginning to plan and prepare for the 2020-21 school year remotely.  Please take note of following information, which will be important for us to ensure a smooth transition into the upcoming school year:

Parents of current Clear View students in Kindergarten – 5th grade:

  • If your child WILL NOT be continuing at Clear View for the 2020-21 school year because you have enrolled your child at another school or you are moving away from Clear View or out of the Chula Vista District, please notify Elizabeth Castro via email (elizabeth.castro@cvesd.org) if you have not already let the school know. Please include your child’s name, current grade, and where your child will be moving to.
  • If your child WILL continue at Clear View for the 2020-21 school year, you will eventually need to provide proof of residency, as is required before every new school year. The District is currently finalizing the system we will be using for proving residency. Please DO NOT use the Online Enrollment system to provide annual residency for the 2020-21 school year.  This system is only to be used for NEW students. More information about residency to come.

Leader in Me

This week we will focus on Habit 3: Put First Things First. Put first things first means to prioritize things in your life. If you have a lot of things to do, ask yourself what is most important and do that first. This is a particularly important habit for students as they develop and solidify routines to help get the most out of distance learning.

Someone who puts first things first says, “I spend time on things that are most important. This means I say no to things I know I shouldn’t do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow a plan. I am disciplined and organized.”

Future skills that can be learned by putting first things first:

1 Demonstrate time management skills, 2 Cultivate a strong work ethic, flexibility, and adaptability, 3 Develop interpersonal skills of self-management, 4 Be accountable and responsible for actions and results, 5 Begin to cultivate analytical skills

Here are a few books that help you learn more about putting first things first. We encourage you to listen to these stories and have a discussion about what the story teaches us about putting first things first:

  • The Little Red Hen by Paul Galdone;  LINK – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2E72TZy0LNo
  • Alejandro’s Gift by Richard E. Albert;  LINK – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vb_i6sjE4pY

  • Pigsty by Mark Teague;  LINK – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCJyJup0qcc

Other Habit 3 Activities:

  • Create a list of things that your child needs to accomplish throughout the week. With your child, rank the tasks by importance. Rewrite the list in order and post it by the calendar or some lace that will be seen throughout the week.
  • Set goals as a family.
  • Plan time as a family.

Distance Learning

Our first week of Distance Learning is officially in the books! Clear View teachers have been hard at work connecting with families and students, planning and preparing, and now implementing a new model of teaching – Distance Learning. As we roll out Distance Learning at Clear View, we have and will continue to make adjustments in order to best meet the needs of our students. We understand that Distance Learning is new for students and families, so we are doing our best to be flexible and allow for students and families to be flexible with the learning/work at home. Students may work on tasks at various times throughout the day and we encourage them to break up their day with movement, art, play, reading books, having conversations, and VAPA activities that teachers are providing. One of the most important things we can do for our students right now is develop routines for Distance Learning in the home and find a nice balance between work, movement, playing, etc.

Know that we miss you greatly. We hope that all of you have a successful and enjoyable week of learning!

*In case you missed these last week or would like to view them again, here are two videos the Clear View staff put together for you:

Dear Voyagers…

“It’s All Good”

Leader in Me

This week we will focus on Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind. This habit is based on imagination – the ability to envision in your mind what you cannot at the present see with your eyes. Begin with the End in Mind teaches us to begin each day, task, or project with a clear vision of our desired direction and destination, and then continue by flexing our proactive muscles to make things happen.

Someone who thinks with the end in mind says, “I plan ahead and set goals.”, “I do things that have meaning and make a difference; I am an important part of my classroom.”, I can make a difference and contribute to the vision and goals of my school and in my classroom.”, “I look for ways to be a good citizen.”.

Activity 1: Take some time to talk to your child about Habit #2. Some points of conversation related to beginning with the end in mind include:

  • What your child hopes to become
  • What long term and short term goals you child has
  • Talents your child wants to develop
  • The influence your child would like to have on others (i.e. family, friends, classmates)
  • What values matter most to you?

Activity 2Design a family mission statement. Here are a few guiding questions to help you with this process:

  • What does your family want to be known for?
  • How do we treat each other?
  • What unique contributions can we make?
  • What big goals do we want to achieve?
  • What unique talents or skills do we have?
  • Brainstorm ideas, words, and phrases to include in the mission statement

Virtual Spirit Days

The Spirit Days are as follows:

Wednesday, April 22: Purple Up for Military Families – April is the Month of the Military Child. In honor of our military families we are going to Purple Up by wearing purple. Wearing purple is a visible way to show support and thank military youth for their strength and sacrifices.

Friday, April 24: Voyager Wear Day – Dress up in your Clear View Voyager gear to show your school spirit!

Clear View Weekly News – April 13 – 17

Hello Clear View Families!

I hope this message finds you healthy and doing well.  Please take a moment to read through the information provided in this week’s post. Have a wonderful week of learning Voyagers!

Welcome Back

Welcome back to the 4th quarter! We have missed you all tremendously and are excited to be able to resume school this week via Distance Learning. The staff has created two  brief videos for you as our way of letting you know that you are missed and to share a fun, positive message with you. The videos can accessed using the links below:

Dear Voyagers…

“It’s All Good”

Distance Learning Begins

This week marks the beginning of Distance Learning for Clear View students and families. In preparation for the onset of Distance Learning, our teachers worked diligently last week to connect with families and students, plan and prepare for Distance Learning instruction, and communicate plans for Distance Learning to families. Since Distance Learning is new for both teachers and students (and families), I respectfully ask that you are patient with our instructional team. Our goal for Distance Learning this week is to provide families with instructional/instructional resources, to engage and connect with students throughout the week, begin to develop structures and routines, and work through the challenges that Distance Learning presents. Rest assured, we will work hard to support you and your child through this new model of learning. We are in this together!

Leader in Me – Being Proactive at Home

This week we will focus on Habit 1: Be Proactive. This habit teaches us that we are responsible for ourselves and reminds us that we are “response-able”. We choose our behavior and our mindset. We choose our actions and moods. We can have a “can do” attitude.

This week, take some time to talk to your child about the highly effective practices related to Habit #1. They include:

  • Pause and respond based on principles and desired results
  • Use proactive language – “I can.” “I’m sorry.” “I choose to ___.” “I will get this done.” “There must be something we can do.”
  • Focus on your circle of influence  – this circle includes those things you can affect directly
  • Become a transition person – a highly proactive person can stop the transmission of negative patterns by modeling positive behavior and passing on effective habits that strengthen and build others in  positive ways
  • Taking responsibility for your actions
  • Take initiative to make things happen

This week’s FAMILY CHALLENGE: Your challenge is to listen to the following stories and have a discussion about how the character(s) in the stories demonstrated Habit 1: Be Proactive. If any characters were not proactive in the story, talk about what he/she could have done differently to demonstrate proactive practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

We have encountered a number of questions and are doing our best to address them in a timely manner.  Below, please find some Frequently Asked Questions:

Question:  When will my child (Gr. 3 – 6) receive a device?

A:  There is no date of when or if students will be distributed devices. Other districts have moved ahead with this initiative, however, at this time our district has opted to gather more data about current technology supports in the home.  This data collection includes access to devices and broadband speed before determining if a roll-out of devices is the best option or solution for our students to access Distance Learning.

Connectivity at home is as important as the device(s) in the home.  There is a huge difference between issuing a laptop, and then being able to use it at home.  Creating an equitable learning environment is critical for our students to learn.  If we do issue devices, or printed packets for that matter, it will likely occur after the next two weeks.  Currently, public health officials say sheltering in place is critical to stem a predicted surge in coronavirus cases.

Please see the link below for more information about this topic from our Superintendent. Superintendent Message Click Here

Question:  My child does not have access to a device, how can they participate in Distance Learning?

A:  Distance learning means that learning opportunities are provided to students while the teacher and the student are in different locations (i.e., outside the traditional classroom environment).  Distance learning may include student-instructor interaction through the use of a computer and/or telecommunications technology to deliver instruction and check-in time. This may include video or audio instruction in which the primary mode of communication between the student and instructor is on-line interaction, instructional television, video, or other instruction that relies on printed materials.

Our teachers are doing their best to be creative and come up with ideas beyond relying on technology to participate in Distance Learning.  Please make sure to communicate your current situation with your teachers, so that they can better understand and support your child during this new learning time.

Question:  Is the District developing a plan to increase broadband access for our learning community?

A:  CVESD is working in partnership with the City of Chula Vista and the Classroom of the Future Foundation for possible broadband expansion, such as incorporating hotspots in our neediest neighborhoods.  There are a number of service providers.  Click here for a list of providers.  For example, effective Monday, March 16, Cox Communications began providing:

  • Limited-time, first two months free of Connect2Compete service, $9.95/month thereafter. Cox also has increased Connect2Compete speeds to 50 mbps.
  • Until May 15, 2020, we are providing phone and remote desktop support through Cox Complete Care at no charge to provide peace of mind and ease for technology needs
  • Resources for discounted, refurbished equipment through its association with PCs for People. Click here to view informational flyer in English and Spanish.
  • A Learn from Home toolkit for schools, including instructions on how to fast-track eligible students without internet access:

We plan to continue to advocate for plan upgrades (increased bandwidth) to support the needs of students at home during this unprecedented crisis.

Question:  Is there a place where I can purchase an affordable device?

A:  Yes.  https://www.cox.com/residential/internet/connect2compete/low-cost-computer.html

Question:  My child left his/ her glasses at school.  May I get them?

A:  Yes. Please email ray.devore@cvesd.org for more information. Note that I am working remotely; so I will do our best to respond in a timely manner.

As always, thank you for your partnership and support.  I know we all look forward to the day when we will be able to reunite and resume learning on campus together.  Please let your children know we miss them and that our staff is excited to resume school and begin the fourth quarter!

Stay healthy and positive!

Sincerely,

Ray DeVore, Principal

Clear View Weekly News – April 6 – 10

Dear Families,

On behalf of the entire Clear View team, I would like to express how much we miss you and hope that this message finds you and your family well.

Due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic, CVESD will embark upon a distance learning instructional model for all students until further notice.  To view our District newsletter regarding distance learning & other related items, please CLICK HERE.

During this time, Clear View’s goal is to keep student learning alive and well until health officials determine that is safe to reopen our school.  This week (April 6 – 10), our teachers will be planning and preparing curriculum for distance learning instruction.  Teachers will not, however, assign academic work this week.  Distance learning for students will start, to the extent possible, on Monday, April 13.

This week, your child’s teacher will reach out to you by email or phone.  It’s important that you reply in a timely manner, as we need to assess the distance learning resources available at your home and confirm that all students are able to communicate with their teachers.

We will strive to provide your child with a quality education during the final quarter of the school year.  Since distance learning is new for both teachers and students, I respectfully ask that you are patient with our instructional team.  Rest assured, we’ll work hard to support you and your child through this new model of learning.

As always, thank you for your partnership and support.  I look forward to the day when we will be able to reunite and resume learning on campus together.  Please let your children know we miss them and that our staff is excited to connect with them this week.

Warm regards,

Ray DeVore, Principal

Meal Distribution

Please read the latest information from our Superintendent about food distribution. Food distribution will take place at 9 sites across the district beginning on Tuesday, April 7. Please note the slight change in the distribution process and locations this week.

The District will resume meal distribution at nine school sites for much of the week following Spring Break: Tues., April 7 – Friday, April 10. Meal bags will contain breakfast and lunch servings. District and school staff will start distributing the meal bags at 10 a.m., and will stop once all bags are distributed on a first come, first served basis. Meals are intended for our neediest children between the ages of 1 to 18. These schools have a student population where 50 percent or more are on free/reduced priced meal program.

Students who are receiving meals should be physically present. Meals may consist of packaged, refrigerated, and frozen items. Heating instructions will be included for entrees.
