Leader in Me

This week we will be focusing once again on Habit 5: Seek first to understand, then to be understood. The premise of Habit 5 is that we have greater influence with others if we understand them first. When we listen with the intent to understand others, rather than with the intent to reply, we begin true communication and relationship building. Seeking to understand takes kindness;  seeking to be understood takes courage. Effectiveness lies in balancing the two.

For the final two weeks of the quarter we will be focusing on Habit 5: Seek first to understand, then to be understood. The premise of Habit 5 is that we have greater influence with others if we understand them first. This habit requires us to practice “empathic listening” (paying attention to another person with empathy). At home, spend some time talking about and working on the following skills:

  • Listening without interrupting
  • Attempting to understanding problems before attempting to solve them
  • When listening, trying to see things from the other person’s point of view, not just your own
